7) Workgroup Manager - Share Points

Continuing on with the Workgroup Manager, let’s set up a share point where users can share and store files on the server.

  • On the top menu, select Sharing, then press the “All” tab next to Share Points.

Share Point Panel 1

  • Click on the Shared Items folder to select it. This is where we’ll create a new share point directory.

Share Point Panel 2

  • Press on the New Folder button on the lower left. You’ll be prompted to name the new folder. For this example, I called it “Apple Share Files”. Click OK.

Share Point Panel 3

  • With the Apple Share Files folder selected, click on the check box “Share this item and its contents”. This will activate the share point.

Share Point Panel 4

  • Click on the Access tab. Here you can configure access privileges for the share point.

If you have users and groups created, this is where you can add them. When you click on the Users & Groups button, a drawer will slide open on the side where you can select and drag users and groups into the Access Control List.

Share Point Panel 5
Access Control List (ACL) will allow you to fine tune your permission and privilege settings for users and groups, depending on your needs. For example, you may not want everyone in a particular group to have read and write access to certain files or folders.

There will be many situations where this level of control will come in handy, but keep in mind that privileges that are assigned in the ACL will override standard permissions listed above.

Here’s an optional test you can do to test out ACL:

  • Launch TextEdit and write a few sentences in a new file.
  • Save the file in the Apple Shared Files folder.
  • As of now, the permissions are set to “Read Only” as indicated in the Access panel. This applies to John Doe since he’s not the owner of the text file nor does he belong to the admin group. He would fall under the “Everyone” category.
  • Click on Users & Group button, select John Doe from the drawer and drag it into the ACL list.
  • In the Permission drop down menu, select “Read & Write”. He now has permission to read and write whereas before, he was only able to read files.

You’ll see the results when we log on using John Doe’s account in the next lesson.
Share Point Panel 6

Click on the Protocols tab. When you create a share point, 3 protocols - AFP (Apple), SMB (Windows), and FTP are enabled by default. Since we won’t be using SMB or FTP, let’s disable them in the drop down menu.

  • In Windows File Setting, uncheck “Share this item using SMB”.
  • Under FTP Setting, uncheck “Share this item using FTP”.
