The OS X Server 10.4 (Tiger) Tutorial sections 14 through 16 are now up.

The final three lessons shows you how to configure the VPN Server and connect to it using a client, how to set up the Print Server and lastly, the QuickTime Streaming Server. Click here for the tutorials.

That pretty much wraps up the OS X Server tutorial for now. I may write an addendum for some stuff that wasn’t covered.

I’ve owned the Sharp Aquos LC37GP1U LCD Gaming HDTV since March and overall, I’ve been very impressed with it. The LC37GP1U was designed specifically for gaming with a feature called the “Viper Drive”, which reduces lag and response times associated with LCDs to imperceptible levels.

Having recently bought a PS3 to make full use of this feature, I can say that the Viper Drive works as advertised, even in full 1080P resolution. This feature minimizes the processing that occurs when the set receives its signal via HMDI, similar to a pass through that allows the picture to be displayed faster. The low 6 second response time of the LCD also helps in that regard.

Samsung offers a similar gaming mode but my understanding is that it only reduces lag by about 30 percent.

The OS X Server 10.4 (Tiger) Tutorial sections 11 through 13 are now up.

The continuing lessons shows you how to set up Apache web server, FTP server, and the firewall. Click here for the tutorials.

I also created a new section for setting up Apache, MySQL, and PHP on OS X Server as well as the Client.

They’re calling it Pro Labs where 6 people sign up for 2 hours lessons, once a week for four weeks.

The classes start on Jan. 7 next year. Did I mention the classes are free?

The continuing lessons shows you how to use Workgroup Manager to set up and manage network accounts and groups, create share points, set up the mail server, and configure the mail client.

I had plans to put together a site where people can download free themes, but haven’t had the time for it. I hope to get something up in the next few months for the post holiday PS3 owners.

TinkerTool is another great shareware application that gives you access to preference settings that are hidden in OS X. It’s very useful for tweaking your systems, especially for older models where you want to reduce as much resources as possible when running OS X Server.

One example would be to disable Widgets from being activated, which can often happen by accident. Widgets may be useful, but they are enormous memory hogs that you’ll want to avoid in a server setting.

Other tweaks of interest is the ability to turn off extraneous eyecandy within the Finder that can slow down your system.

In case you haven’t heard, Mike Bommbich’s Carbon Copy Cloner is up to version 3.

This is a really great piece of software for creating backups and images of your drive. It’s very useful for scheduling backups automatically so you’ll be ready in the unfortunate event of catastrophic drive failure. Things fall apart you know.

It will also come in very handy in case you mess something up while tinkering within the guts of OS X Server.

It goes over basic requirements needed to get your server up and running, followed by lessons on setting up DNS services and Apple’s Open Directory. Click here for the tutorials.

This is the first run of this tutorial so I’m sure there are typos and mistakes here and there, but I’ll be editing and refining it as I go along. Feel free to ask questions and take part in discussions.

The funny thing is that one of my first cars was a beat up old Cadillac that was passed down from my father to my brother and then to me. It lasted all of 6 months before it was scrapped.

Would I ever buy another Cadillac? Probably not.
